Message from the Assyrian monastery St Gabriel:"We have won the first trial!"

Midyat - (May 22, 2009)

The Assyria Foundation - Netherlands received a phonecall from the Assyrian monastery of St Gabriel in Northern Assyria, Turkey, informing us about the victory in the first trial against the accusations and allegations by the muslim neighbourins regarding the landregistrations.

The secretary of the St Gabriel monastery personally delivered this news in a phonecall this morning. He thanked all the Assyrians in the Netherlands for their continues support and asked us to not only pray but also update ourselves actively regarding the other two trials that have been postponed for another month. "The Assyrian monastery Mor Gabriel is the "Jerusalem" of the Assyrians from Tur Abdin!", said the secretary of the St Gabriel monastery.

So far, the monastery hired to lawyers to defend themselves against the accusations of the neighbouring muslim villages. Rudi Sumer, een Assyrian lawyer from the village Arbo, and his Kurdish colleague reacted very happy by the decision of the judge, however they did not want to call it a victory until the other two cases are wonn as well.

In a reaction on this issue, Sabri Gabriël (member of the city council of Enschde for the Christian Democrats) said:" Thisis the reason why I went to South East Turkey and attended the trial in february 2009. Namely, to pressure Turkey politically by displaying and disapproving their oppressive games and injustice practices they commit against the local Assyrian population and their Syrian Orthodox monastery St Gabriel. But luckily justice has been done in Turkey this time."

Also Attiya Gamri (provincial parliamentarian for the Dutch Labour party) was very happy by this news:" The Assyrians in Europe are incredibly attached to this monastery in South East Turkey. About ninety percent of the Assyrian language teachers in Europe have been educated by the St Gabriel Monastery Professor Issa Garis and his Eminence the Bishop Mor Timotheus Samuel Aktas. Thanks to both of them we still speak this endangered language so well. A language that goes back to King Sennacherib [Sanharib] of Assyria and Jesus Christ and the Apostles. Several dutch politicians deserve a big compliment who gave a lot of attention to this issue of our monastery and other Assyrian issues. These are  Esther de Lange, Pieter Omtzigt, Wim van de Camp and Maarten Haverkamp (all of them Christian Democrats )

Foundation Assyria - Netherlands wishes to thank all the Dutch and Assyrian politicians who continuesly supported us on behalf of the St Gabriel Monastery.
